 Thailand
I had some friends who have visited Thailand in the past few years and they all loved it. They said it was relatively inexpensive, especially after you got there.

 Re: Thailand
My dad lives there; you can get custom tailored clothes very cheap in Thailand. I know some performers who visit every year to get their costumes made

 Re: Thailand
It's sad really because I bet the work over there is much better than it is here and they probably get paid very little.

 Re: Thailand
I'm not sure what the tailors are paid there but my dad's wife used to be one of them; she said they were pretty well respected in Thai culture. They may not make a lot but food in Thailand is cheap and plentiful... my sister said the fruits and vegetables they grow are enormous.

Sounds like a nicer, simpler place.

 Re: Thailand
The last I read about Thailand there were reports of violence as a result of political crisis there, airport closures. It seems like this was recently, but I haven't seen Thailand in the news for some weeks. What's going on over there now, is it safe to travel?

 Re: Thailand
More disappointing news on Thailand. I hope the situation there gets better soon. UK issues Bangkok travel warningQuote: The Foreign Office has warned Britons against travelling to Bangkok after violence and rioting erupted in the Thai capital.
Soldiers and tanks appeared in the city after the Thai authorities declared a state of emergency - a day after protests stopped a major Asian summit.
The FCO urged anyone considering a trip to the capital or its surrounding areas to "urgently review their plans".

 Re: Thailand
My dad seems nonchalant about the political situation in Thailand, probably because the unrest seems to be centered in Bangkok while he's in Nonthaburi to the north. (Of course, this is the man who waited out an attempted coup in Chile by diving behind the hotel bar, someday his luck will run out)
