Post "Not a tourtist"?
I'm wondering why this site is called I'm not a tourist? When most questions involve tourism. Is it ironic? Or is it because a person can respond to questions about where they are from because they are not a tourist there?

I have been waiting for this question for quite awhile now. The answer to it is simple really.

Even when you're a tourist you really don't want to be label as a tourist who walks around cluelessly in a new city with his travel book. So to avoid this dreaded image a tourist can ask people on this site, who have been to the city or even better a local living in the city, what are the best places to go and get answers that a typical guide book would not have mention.

You probably have already done this in real life. Have you had friends or relative come visit and you offer to show them around town? Yea, I bet you have. What this site does is make that information you would have given to your friends or relative and instead of sharing it with a few you make it available to many more people.

Absolutely, and that's an excellent reason for the name.
I've lived in countless cities across the states and been through a LOT more over my 35 years and I've got to say that the first few months was hell, trying to NOT look like a tourist.

Even when I go back home (read: my birth place) to Seattle, I do stupid tourist stuff, because it's been so long since I've actually lived there

I don't know about other cities, but in New York City if you're marked as a tourist you're more likely to get mugged. It can be a matter of safety, to look like you know where you are and what you're doing.

Very well put, especially in larger cities, as you said. Though, I've had luck in Chicago, middle of the night, walking from greyhound to nearby blocks, carrying my bags, trying to catch a cab, but I wouldn't recommend it ;)

Ok, well explained. Makes a whole lot of sense.
