Post New travel rules starting June 1
Starting June 1, 2009, U.S. citizens coming back from Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, by land or sea, will be required following: passport, passport card, enhanced driver’s license, or one of three trusted traveler program cards (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST).

For more information visit GetYouHome.

This really only applies if you travel by vehicle or sea vessel as air travel already requires a passport. Even if you don't have one of these form of identification in the first few months of this new rule you would not be denied entry back to the U.S., but you will most likely be delayed.

I need to find out how to get on a trusted traveler program. I had to drive into Canada a couple times recently, and the wait time was unusually long crossing the border. The NEXUS lane was empty and occasionally a car would just zip through.

If you travel to Canada frequently then you might want to get the NEXUS card. To qualify for this trusted traveler program you need to be a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States or Canada, lived in either or both countries for a period of at least three years and pass both criminal history and law enforcement checks.

You may not qualify if you:
* Are inadmissible to the United States or Canada under applicable immigration laws;
* Provide false or incomplete information on their application;
* Have been convicted of a criminal offense in any country;
* Have been found in violation of customs, agriculture, or immigration law;
* Will not lawfully reside in either Canada or the United States for the term of their NEXUS membership; or
* Fail to meet other requirements of the NEXUS program.

In addition, both the United States and Canada must approve your application. If denied by either country you will not be able to participate in the NEXUS program.

You can apply online on the Global Online Enrollment System website.
Fees: $50

Thanks for the heads-up, we were kinda tossing around the idea of checking out Montreal this summer.

I remember the days of just showing a license if you happened to get stopped.

If a terrorist can build a bomb, he can certainly get some fake ID.
