Do people actually visit South Korea as a tourist destination?

I think they do now. South Korea is one of the most hi-tech places in the world now. Seoul I've heard is quite beautiful. They hosted the olympics and the world cup there pretty recently...
Don't forget to check out the city of Kyongju nicknamed the “museum without walls” for its number of important architectural monuments. There is also the cave of Sokurram that contains a massive statue of Buddha.

They are good and my favorite is the Bulgogi (beef). I have even made my own with the sauce I bought at the Korean store. Delicious.

South Korea has emerged very well in last few years and it has been able to attract crowd and tourists. It is like Cuba which is now leading to success.
